Hernia-focused practice

About Joshua Hernia Surgery Center
Founded by Dr. Alpha Lin, Joshua Hernia Surgery Center focuses on hernia surgery, natural-tissue reconstruction, and biomechanical repair of the abdominal wall. We believe hernia care should go beyond patching a defect. Our approach begins with the body's structure, pressure distribution, and load-bearing pathways — then designs a repair tailored to each patient.

Who we are
Joshua Hernia Surgery Center is not a general practice. We are a dedicated center with a long-standing focus on hernia treatment. When patients first notice a bulge in the groin, around the navel, or elsewhere in the abdomen, common questions arise: Is this a hernia? Do I need surgery? Can it be repaired without mesh? Will it be painful? How soon can I return to normal life? These are the questions we answer every day — and the same questions we address in surgery. For us, hernia repair does not end when the bulge is reduced and the defect is closed. What matters most is understanding why the abdominal wall failed, where the pressure originated, and how to restore stable function in a way appropriate to the individual patient. Our work is not about standardized "hole-patching." It is about a more complete reconstruction of the abdominal wall, grounded in each patient's anatomy, lifestyle, and post-operative goals.

Our clinic

Meet the physician
Founder and director of Joshua Clinic, Dr. Lin is a senior hernia surgery specialist and the inventor of the US-patented "minimally invasive hernia surgery" technique. He has focused for many years on hernia surgery, natural-tissue reconstruction, and biomechanical repair of the abdominal wall, and is board-certified in both general surgery and urology.

In the operating room

Our guiding principle
A hernia may look like a simple opening, but it is more often the visible result of long-standing biomechanical imbalance in the abdominal wall. Covering the opening can appear to solve the problem while leaving the underlying tension, mobility, and load distribution incompletely restored. This is one reason some patients continue to worry about foreign-body sensation, chronic pain, restricted movement, or recurrence after conventional repair. Our approach begins from the mechanics of the abdominal wall. The goal of repair is not only to close the defect but to restore the support and mobility the wall was designed to provide.

Features of our procedure
Patient concerns are concrete. Some worry about permanent synthetic mesh inside the body. Some fear general anesthesia. Others worry about post-operative pain, prolonged time off work, or being unable to exercise. Some have undergone prior surgery and live with the fear of recurrence. Our minimally invasive procedure was designed with exactly these concerns in mind.
Reconstruction performed with the patient's own tissue.
Avoiding the burden of general anesthesia and intubation.
Reduced tissue disruption and post-operative discomfort.
A hernia center serving international patients
Joshua Hernia Surgery Center has long cared for patients from Taiwan and from abroad. For many international patients, choosing to travel for surgery is not simple. Beyond surgical expertise, they need clear pre-operative information, English-language communication, travel planning, a transparent surgical-day workflow, and reliable remote follow-up. We therefore consider the full care journey — not just the operation itself — to be part of our work.
Not sure if it's a hernia?
If you notice a bulge in the groin, near the navel, or elsewhere in the abdomen — particularly when standing, coughing, or lifting — and it recedes when you lie down, it may be a hernia. There is no need to guess, and no reason to wait until pain or incarceration develops.
